Overview
Effective rainwater management is essential in urban and industrial areas to prevent flooding and conserve water. One of our prominent client sought to enhance the design process for rainwater storage chambers, addressing challenges such as inefficient manual workflows and outdated tools. An intuitive 2D design layout generator web application was developed for them that streamlined their operations and improved output quality.
- Transitioning from standalone to web-based 2D design tools.
- Converting designs from HTML Canvas to PDF and CAD-compatible DWG formats.
- A user-friendly web application allowing parameterized chamber design.
- Features included manhole placement, scaling, camera panning, and project management.
- Reduced errors with real-time validation and embedded parameters.
- Enhanced efficiency with project saving, editing, and exporting to professional formats.
- Boosted client capabilities in rainwater design and management.
Case
One of our prominent client, dedicated to minimizing environmental impact, designs and implements large-scale rain water storage solutions to prevent flooding and promote water conservation. However, they faced significant challenges in configuring and designing rain water storage across various sites. The traditional design process required considerable manual effort, and the previous application they used was not user-friendly, creating more hurdles in the design process.
These water storage systems play an essential role in managing excess rain water in urban and industrial areas. These systems can be implemented using minimal land space and installed under carparks, roadways, and heavy earth loads. Additionally, they help recharge groundwater levels, maintain urban hydrology, and protect nearby structures, roads, and landscapes. The systems are also quick to install, saving both cost and resources.
Due to growing regulatory demands and the need for accurate layouts, our client wanted to improve efficiency and accuracy in configuring rainwater storage solutions. To meet these needs, Travancore Analytics partnered with the client to design a web application that could generate 2D layouts for rainwater storage chambers. Our solution allows the client to create site-specific layouts according to user requirements in an intuitive and user-friendly environment.
Challenges
During the development of the 2D design layout generator web application, we faced specific technical challenges in creating a fully functional web application.
- Traditionally, 2D design tools are developed as standalone applications which allows complex graphical rendering and functionality. However, we needed to bring the tool’s capabilities onto a web based platform to make it more accessible. This required overcoming limitations associated with web based graphics and rendering abilities and gaining specialized knowledge in React Canvas. We also had to ensure that the tool remained responsive and accurate.
- Another major challenge we faced was converting the design output from HTML canvas format to pdf and dwg format that was supported by CAD tools. The initial design layout generated by the tool was in a HTML Canvas format, which worked for on-screen display but not ideal for documentation purpose. For an efficient workflow, generating the layout in a pdf format as well as into CAD compatible DWG format for detailed project integration and further editing. This conversion process required efficient coding and components to preserve the layout’s details, measurements, scaling and other parameters without compromising the quality of the design output.
Solution
To address the challenges faced by the client, we developed a robust 2D design layout generator web application which is capable of creating 2D layouts for rainwater storage chambers. The application let users design chambers for different companies, i.e., storm water, rain safe and Triton. While generating the layout, users can set different parameters such as storage volume, length, width, tank base elevation etc.The application also incorporates other features commonly seen in major design tools such as camera panning, resize, add/delete chambers, add/ delete inlets and outlets of the chamber.
The user could save the project along with the system parameters and details entered in the project tab. Users could also add a manhole to the chambers to plan how the water should enter into the chambers.
The 2D configuration tool for rainwater management offers,
- User authentication and access control
- Chamber design
- Configure chamber beds
- Save and manage projects
- Manhole placement
- Scaling options
Impact
The introduction of this advanced rainwater design configuration application has brought significant positive impact to the client. The application streamlined the design process. The application allowed users to design and customize chambers across multiple company models with precision. Since the application has embedded parameters with minimum and maximum limits and enables real-time validation messages, likelihood of costly rework has been reduced. The centralized project management features including save, manage, allowing users to easily access, edit or delete projects has enabled faster decision making and efficient project tracking.
Moreover, with options to export designs to pdf and dwg formats, the application produces professional, high-quality outputs suitable for engineering documentations and integration with CAD software. This application has transformed client’s rainwater design and management capabilities, boosting client’s standard of work as well.
